David Folland - The Artist
David Folland has been passionate about all things automotive since he was a small boy. Legend has it that the first word he uttered was “radiator” – and he wasn’t referring to the central heating! Born in Portsmouth in 1953, he quickly became an avid reader, and over the years has amassed a comprehensive collection of books on the subject of motor racing, mostly of a bygone era. His favourite author of those early days is Gary Doyle, whose books on Jimmy Murphy, ‘King of the Boards’, and Ralph de Palma, are amongst the finest books on motor racing of any era that you would wish to read (www.king-of-the-boards.com ). David and Hastings At Portsmouth Grammar School his favourite subject was Art, and in his spare time he would undertake private commissions to supplement his pocket money! However, he went on to study Sociology, and subsequently law, being called to the Bar in 1976. Since then he has worked in the Magistrates’ Courts' Service, and latterly as a Barrister in private practice in West Wales. The need to earn a living unfortunately precluded him from indulging his first love of painting, but his interest in all aspects of motor sport, and automotive art has been constantly upheld. Semi-retirement has now permitted him to return to his childhood dream and pursue both loves – cars and art.
Still a devoted fan of Formula 1, and an admirer of the talents of Michael Schumacher, he has to look back to the earlier days for his real heroes. Travelling back through time, top of the list would be Ayrton Senna, Gilles Villeneuve, Jim Clark and Nuvolari. Shortly to appear on this website will be a tribute picture of Jim Clark driving the Lotus 49 – keep watching this space! Several other exciting paintings of these giants of the sport are currently in the planning stage. David now lives in Carmarthenshire where he shares his home with his wife, Marian, his Old English Sheepdog, Hastings, his cat, Nellie, and three ducks. Marian, Nellie and the ducks admit to possessing no artistic talent whatsoever. Hastings, however, claims affiliations to a paintbrush through his breed associations with a famous brand of paint! |
